Everclear is one of the leading alternative rock bands to emerge from the ’90s. Since forming in 1992, the band has released 11 studio albums, four certified Gold or Platinum, sold over 6 million records, and earned 12 Top 40 hit singles on Mainstream Rock, Alternative, and Adult Top 40 radio, including “Santa Monica,” “Father of Mine,” “I Will Buy You a New Life,” “Wonderful,” and “Everything to Everyone.” The band has also released numerous videos, played thousands of shows, and received various accolades, including a 1998 Grammy nomination.

After his band Colorfinger disbanded in 1992, Art Alexakis struggled to make it in Portland, where he had moved from San Francisco. That difficult personal and creative period shaped the songwriting on Everclear’s early demos, the Nervous & Weird EP (1993), and World of Noise, released on Portland independent label Tim/Kerr Records. The 1993 release of World of Noise, the band’s college radio efforts, and its growing Portland following attracted major-label attention. Capitol Records signed the group soon after. Everclear’s major-label debut, the 1995 platinum-selling album Sparkle and Fade, featured the chart-topping hit “Santa Monica.”

In 2019, while being treated for an injury caused by a minor car accident, Alexakis was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) and learned he had likely been living with the disease for nearly twenty years. Since his diagnosis, he has donated one dollar from every ticket purchased for his performances to charities such as Sweet Relief Musicians Fund and the National MS Society.

In 2022, Everclear reissued World of Noise as a remastered deluxe 30th-anniversary edition, with six bonus songs and, for the first time, availability on digital streaming platforms. That year, the band also released the retrospective video “Everclear – 30 Years Gone: A Retrospective,” hosted by Matt Pinfield, and embarked on a North American tour. A Los Angeles show was recorded and filmed for Live at The Whisky a Go Go, released via Sunset Blvd. Records. The live album features hits and lesser-known songs from Everclear’s catalog, as well as two new original bonus studio tracks.

Alexakis also created and runs the annual Summerland Tour, featuring ’90s alternative rock bands, and released his first solo album, Sun Songs, in 2019.
