About

Join us for a unique BioBlitz during the 2026 City Nature Challenge!

The City Nature Challenge is all about finding and photographing local wildlife. Help the Jordan River Commission and the Natural History Museum of Utah document wildlife at Jordan River Migratory Bird Reserve, a federally protected natural area that is typically closed to the public. We'll gather to observe and record wild plants, animals, and fungi onsite using the iNaturalist app. New and seasoned iNaturalist users are welcome.

We'll gather for a brief introduction to the site at 10:00am, and will spend the remainder of the event exploring and photographing species throughout the Reserve. This site does not feature paved trails and will require walking across uneven ground.

The event is Free, but registration is required.

Event location & parking:
- Recommended parking: the shopping center lot west of the Jordan River, near 10653 S River Front Pkwy, South Jordan, UT 84095. This parking area is on the opposite side of the Jordan River from the Reserve access gate.
- To access the Reserve from this parking area: travel briefly north on the Jordan River Parkway Trail, crossing east over the bridge along 10600 S. The Reserve access gate is on the east side of the Jordan River, near the La Quinta Inn. Look for the white pop-up tent at the site when you arrive.

Additional details:
- The Jordan River Migratory Bird Reserve is typically closed to the public and includes the confluence of Willow Creek and the Jordan River.
- No bathrooms are on site, but there are nearby businesses with restrooms available.
- There is one dirt road and various game trails to explore. Be prepared to travel over uneven ground and respect the plants and animals you encounter.
- The terminus of Willow Creek can be swampy and flooded; we recommend shoes and clothing that keep you comfortable in these conditions.
- Come prepared to be outside in whatever the weather brings, and bring the ability to photograph wildlife with a smartphone or camera.
- The site gate will remain open for participants to come and go during the event.
- All iNaturalist observations made from April 24-27 will count towards the 2026 City Nature Challenge.

We're excited to explore with you!
