The ring will be made by Rene Venegas, a 16th-generation silversmith. His family was one of the first to arrive from Spain to the Americas. His ancestor, Felipe Venegas, was the silversmith for the early cathedrals in the Dominican Republic and stamped the first European coins in the New World. Rene has been making jewelry since he was a child in his father’s silver shop in Bogota, Colombia, and has been teaching jewelry and silversmithing classes at Weber State for 15 years. He has also been featured in The Standard Examiner, The Signpost, KUTV Inside the Story, FOX13 Good Morning Utah, The Salt Project, and KTVX Good Things Utah. Most recently, he received Ogden City’s Mayor’s Art Award for Folk Art.
