Under the Night Sky: A Dark-Sky Art & Stargazing Experience
Location
About
Inspired by the works of Erika Blumenfeld and the meticulous, hand-drawn maps of the group known as the 'Harvard Computers', this family-friendly event invites participants to observe constellations, planets, and deep-sky objects and create their own star maps.
Travel with the Wasatch Mountain Institute to Jordanelle Reservoir at Jordanelle State Park for an evening of stargazing and guided sketching under Utah’s famously dark skies. Timed with a slim crescent moon, members of the WMI team will lead participants through the park and provide telescopes for close-up views of the sky.
Through simple drawing prompts and traditional mapping techniques, participants will document what they see and create personal 'light maps' that can be scientific or imaginative. Families can make their own constellations and turn guided observations into art.
What to expect:
- Guided stargazing with WMI telescopes
- Sketching and mapping prompts
- Opportunity to create personal 'light maps' from your observations
