About

Winter Solstice Lantern Hike

Monday, December 21, 2026, 6:30–8:30 pm

Gather with us to start a new tradition to bring light to the darkest day of the year! As the shortest day gives way to the return of the light, embrace the stillness and reflect on what truly matters.

Meet at Blackridge Reservoir Trailhead. Participants who registered online will check in; others can sign waivers and receive a lantern. The hike begins around 6:30 pm, once everyone is checked in. It is approximately 4 miles, at an easy pace, with the goal of staying mostly together and enjoying the peacefulness of the winter night.

The route follows Blackridge Trail to Sidewinder, then Diamondback to the viewpoint on the knoll, and back down Diamondback and Blackridge to the trailhead. Park in the Reservoir Parking Lot; if the gate is locked, enter through the exit. The registration tent will be by the Trail Kiosk.

Bring headlamps or other lights, water, warm boots or shoes, and weather-appropriate clothing. Winter gear is mandatory. Recommended layers and gear:
- Base layer: long johns or thermals
- Mid layer: fleece jacket and pants
- Outer layer: winter coat and snow pants
- Warm snow boots or hiking shoes and winter socks
- Snow gloves
- A hat or scarf to cover ears and nose; it can be windy on the knoll
- Hand and toe warmers
- Shoe spikes if trails are snowy

If the trails are muddy, the hike will move to the Trail of Hope on the Midas Creek Trail. Park in the Herriman High School parking lot; the registration tent will be in the southeast corner by the seminary building. The hike will go west to the bridge, cross it, then head east down the Trail of Hope to the next footbridge and back to the parking lot. Follow social media for weather-related updates.

Hot cocoa, prize giveaways, and goodie bags will be available at the end.

Registration:
- Individual: $25
- Families of 4 or more (up to 6 people): $75
- Additional lanterns: $10 per lantern

The registration fee is non-refundable. All proceeds go toward trail building. Lanterns are not guaranteed for participants who register after December 14, 2026. Herriman Trails members can get a 50% off promo code by emailing Jill Lemon at [email protected].

If the event is cancelled due to extreme inclement weather, lanterns will be available for pickup at City Hall. The organizers plan to hike in all conditions unless there is extreme snow, rain, or wind. Follow social media for updates as the event nears.
