About

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain has been performing since 1985, using only a fistful of ukuleles and maintaining that all genres of music are available for reinterpretation. This all-singing, all-strumming (and occasionally dancing) group has performed for more than 40 years.

The first gigs, intended as a bit of fun, were an instant success, leading to national attention, album recordings and global tours. The Orchestra has given thousands of concerts and made TV and radio appearances around the world. It has toured Britain, mainland Europe, Scandinavia, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, China, America, Canada and even the North Pole. Its music has featured in TV programmes, films and commercials. The Orchestra also performed by royal request at the private 90th birthday party of Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle.

The original premise is simple: acoustic instruments, natural voices, no pedals, no light show and no gimmicks. The New York Times says, “They extract more than seems humanly possible from so small and so modest an instrument.” The Orchestra’s shows bring together serious concert artistry and riotous entertainment, with characteristic dry British humour. The repertoire ranges from classical to rock, pop and punk, with well-known songs performed in surprising and genuinely funny ways.

“The best musical entertainment in the country” — Independent newspaper

“The sophisticated sound they make – both percussive and melodic – is at once hilarious and heartfelt” — Financial Times

“There’s a marvelous organization called ‘The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain’ – it’s fantastic!” — King Charles III
