About
Join WenDo Women NY and Refuge Event Space in Troy, NY, for an introductory WenDo Women’s Self Defense course for women, teen girls, and AFAB non-binary people ages 12 and up. The event creates space to connect with others and celebrate strength through practical, accessible self-defense.
Instructor Kristi Taylor shares that Wen-Do is Canada’s oldest women’s self-defense program, designed and taught by women for women and girls (trans and cis) and AFAB non-binary people ages 10 and up. The program uses a feminist, anti-oppression, empowerment framework. Techniques are designed for people of all ages, fitness levels, body types, and abilities, including people who use assistive devices. Courses combine discussion and practical physical skills to build mental and physical preparedness while rejecting victim blaming and “rule setting.”
The introductory course includes:
- Discussion challenging myths and stereotypes about women’s capabilities
- Verbal self-defense
- Physical self-defense strategies, including strikes with hands and feet
- Selected body-hold releases and blocks
Tickets are $75 per person. A limited number of reduced-price solidarity tickets are available for $35 per person, based on self-determined need and offered first-come, first-served.
