Join percussionist and drummer Josh Dekaney for a workshop on the basics of timekeeping, improvisation, and community drumming using hands and sticks. Limited percussion will be provided; please bring your own drum or percussion instrument if you have one.
Josh plays music ranging from Americana to jazz to world music and currently works with groups in central New York, including Mark Doyle’s Guitar Noir, Samba Laranja, Mary Fahl, Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers, and Syracuse Stage. His love of Brazilian music has led him to travel extensively throughout Brazil, studying folk and popular music and working with artists Vera Figueiredo, Flavio Pimenta, Tribores, and Quinteto da Paraíba. He was a featured headliner of the Batuka! 2010 International Drum Fest in São Paulo.
A part-time Professor of Percussion at Syracuse University, Dekaney has taught drum set, hand percussion, improvisation, small combos, and Samba Laranja: The Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble. The ensemble has performed for thousands of public school students and been featured multiple times at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.
Presented by the 443 Music Collective and The 443 Social Club.
