About

Robbie Fulks and Heather Maloney perform at The 443 Social Club & Lounge on November 10.

“It’s time to make a change,” Robbie Fulks declares at the start of Now Then, his second album on Nashville’s Compass Records. Since emerging in the 1990s as a pioneer of today’s Americana movement, Fulks has explored different sounds and themes across 16 albums. His work ranges from folk to power pop, jazz to old-time country. “It’s from an older person’s outlook, and mostly true,” Fulks says of Now Then. “The tone is about 70 percent reflective, 20 percent amused, and 10 percent angry.” He’s performed on stages from the Grand Ole Opry and Late Night with Conan O’Brien to the Hollywood Bowl and Jimmy Kimmel Live, and artists including Sam Bush, Andrew Bird, John Cowan, the Old 97’s, and Hiss Golden Messenger have covered his songs.

Massachusetts-based "writer song-singer" Heather Maloney found music during three years at a meditation center, developing a sound shaped by silent reflection and reverence for storytellers. With over 1,000 international shows and eight studio albums, she is preparing to release her ninth record, Exploding Star (out January 31, 2025). Written in the wake of her father’s death, Exploding Star is a collection of 12 songs tracked in part in her abandoned childhood home and featuring her father’s guitar. Her songs have played on NPR and appeared on syndicated programs like eTown and AudioTree; “Nightstand Drawer” was featured in the season finale of the CBS series Elementary. Maloney is also an illustrator and linocut artist.
