Southern Comfort (1981)
“It's the land of hospitality... unless you don't belong there.” This intense backwoods survival thriller is director Walter Hill’s (The Warriors) masterpiece. Filmed on location in the Louisiana Bayou, it follows a squad of National Guards on an isolated weekend exercise who arrogantly anger local Cajuns, frighteningly intent on hunting these would-be soldiers down. Stuck in unfamiliar territory, the underprepared Guard desperately fight for their lives in a scenario increasingly mirroring elements of America's then-recent Vietnam experience.
Keith Carradine stars with Powers Boothe, Fred Ward, Peter Coyote and Brion James. Soundtrack by six-time Grammy Award winner Ry Cooder (Buena Vista Social Club).
Rated R. 106 minutes.
