About
Drummer, composer, and bandleader Bobby Previte returns to the Van Dyck Music Club on December 19 with his Bitches Brew tribute.
Released in 1970, Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew changed the landscape of jazz, rock, funk, soul, and pop. Previte and the musicians begin where the album left off, using it as a springboard toward new directions.
The project began in 1999 at the Tap Bar of New York City’s Knitting Factory. Every Tuesday, Previte assembled New York improvisers to play the entire Bitches Brew album. The band went on to perform at the Vancouver and Saalfelden festivals and opened the “Wall to Wall Miles” festival at Symphony Space in New York.
Previte continues the project as a workshop for students and local musicians. Using charts he transcribed from the records, he rehearses musicians for two days before directing them in a concert. The project has taken place in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia; at the Birmingham UK Conservatoire; and in cities including Buffalo, New York, and Greensboro, North Carolina.
Saturday, December 19’s performance will feature:
- Keith Pray: Saxophones/Electronics
- Jonathan Talbott: Violin/Electronics
- Lori Friday: Electric Bass/Electronics
- Carl Landa: Keyboards/Electronics
- Zach Layton: Guitar/Electronics
- Bobby Previte: Trap Drums/Conductor
