About
Old Friends Beckoned/New Sounds Reckoned: Matt Steckler, Lonnie Plaxico, Yayoi Ikawa, Tony Lewis.
Steckler / Ikawa / Plaxico / Lewis brings together four jazz musicians with rich, intersecting histories. Their project, Old Friends Beckoned / New Sounds Reckoned (Skydeck), blends their individual artistry into a collective voice through original compositions that set aside personal prowess in favor of deeper collaboration.
Capital Region native Matt Steckler (Matty Stecks) is a versatile performer and composer, primarily a saxophonist and woodwind specialist. He also incorporates vocals, keyboards, percussion, and electronic media into his performances. Recognized for his work with groups like Dead Cat Bounce and Persiflage, Steckler has performed at festivals in North America and Europe.
Pianist and composer Yayoi Ikawa, born in Tokyo and raised musically in New York, has released the straight-ahead jazz piano trio album Angel Eyes and the self-produced collection of original compositions Color of Dreams. She has performed at festivals across the U.S., Japan, Italy, and elsewhere, and believes jazz is a social art form to pass on to future generations.
Bassist Lonnie Plaxico combines classical technique, jazz improvisation, and funk. He has collaborated with Sonny Sitt, Alice Coltrane, Stanley Turrentine, Joe Sample, Abbey Lincoln, and Dizzy Gillespie, and released five albums as a bandleader.
Drummer Tony Lewis, a South Bronx native and graduate of NYC's LaGuardia High School of the Arts, has played with Little Richard, Sting, B.B. King, Dizzy Gillespie, Cyndi Lauper, and Michael Hill’s Blues Mob. His career spans jazz, blues, and funk.
