Lunch & Learn Reading Series: Local Immigration from Dutch to Qʼeqchi’

Although a self-described nation of immigrants, the United States has always had an uneasy relationship with newcomers, vacillating between open-door and exclusionary policies, and wanting the physical and intellectual labor of people, but not always their cultures and languages.

This April, we’ll explore five waves of immigration and their local impact:
- Dutch and Indigenous interaction in the 1600s
- Irish immigrants and quarry work in the late 1800s
- The Great Migration to the North between 1910–1970
- Asians following the Immigration Act of 1965
- Indigenous Qʼeqchi’ making a home here today

Pick up a packet of readings ahead of time at either location.

Stop at the Café first (777 Broadway) to pick up your meal, then head to the Wellness & Empowerment Center next door (775 Broadway) for community and conversation.
