Location

About

Steal This Story, Please! celebrates independent media. The film follows independent journalist Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! as she stands up to politicians, military powers, and corporations. Join us for a screening, followed by an open critical conversation about the power of media, questioning power, and how we can resist with a microphone.

Taking on politicians, CEOs, and riot police, Goodman has reported some of the most urgent and underreported stories of our time. Drawing on an extensive archive, filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin offer a portrait of the journalist and her three decades of truth-telling amid a media landscape reshaped by technology, corporate consolidation, and political assaults on the press. The film critiques mainstream media and celebrates those who challenge it.

After the screening, the audience will rearrange the chairs for an open discussion about the film’s themes and how we can use media in our own acts of resistance. Featuring the film’s producer, Karen Ranucci.

Ranucci has worked in independent video and film production and distribution for 35 years. She began at Downtown Community TV Center, where she taught video production workshops and started its documentary distribution department. She later worked as a reporter, producer, and camera operator for NBC Nightly News and the Today Show, and won an Emmy Award for Best Investigative Reporting in 1985. In 1988, she founded the Latin American Video Archives. After September 11, 2001, she joined the Democracy Now! team to help bring its daily radio program to television and the internet.

Co-sponsored by iEar Presents! and Hudson Mohawk Magazine.
