About

In Steal This Story, Please!, we celebrate independent media. Watch independent journalist Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! stand up to powerful entities such as politicians, military powers, and corporations. Join us for a screening of this documentary, followed by an open critical conversation about the power of media, questioning power, and how we can resist with a microphone. Anyone can contribute to the dialogue.

Taking on politicians, CEOs, and riot police, Amy Goodman has reported some of the most urgent and underreported stories of our time. Drawing on an extraordinary archive, Academy Award-nominated filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin (Trouble the Water, Citizen Koch, The Janes) take us behind the scenes with the warm, wisecracking granddaughter of an Orthodox rabbi, raised in a tradition of asking hard questions. The film follows her through a media landscape reshaped by technology, corporate consolidation, and political assaults on the press. Urgent, provocative, and unexpectedly funny, it is both a critique of mainstream media and a celebration of those who challenge it.

After the screening, we’ll rearrange the chairs for an open conversation about the film’s themes and how we can use the power of media in our own acts of resistance.
