Join Saratoga Joinery for this beginner-oriented class on making a Shaker-inspired step stool. Made of cherry, a wood commonly used by the Shakers, the stool is designed for reaching hard-to-reach places in the kitchen, bath, or bedroom. Space is limited; register early.

Whether you’re new to woodworking or just getting started, this class introduces the craft, with a couple of pro tips for more seasoned woodworkers. No prior knowledge or experience necessary. Ages 16+; minors must be accompanied by an adult.

In this 3-hour session, we’ll cover:
- How to accurately measure and mark pieces
- Methods for making repeated cuts safely and accurately
- Using traditionally manufactured nails to secure parts
- A brief introduction to hand tools, including spoke shaves for rounding the edges of the steps and handle
- Two ways to accurately cut rabbets: the table saw with dado stack and the bandsaw
- Cutting curves on the bandsaw

The class is held at Saratoga Joinery in Saratoga Springs, a community woodworking shop with a mission to make woodworking accessible to all.

This class is related to the exhibition Form and Function: The Beauty of Shaker Design, on view through January 10, 2027. Registration includes museum admission and a guided tour of the exhibition during a regularly scheduled tour time: Thursday, Saturday, or Sunday at 2 pm. The Museum is open Thursday–Sunday, 10 am–5 pm.
