About

The Nick Moss Band Featuring Dennis Gruenling

July 7, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm (Doors 5:30 pm)
The 443 Social Club & Lounge
443 Burnet Ave, Syracuse, NY 13203

Since forming in 2016, guitarist Nick Moss and harmonica virtuoso Dennis Gruenling have become torchbearers for traditional electric blues. Their high-energy take on Chicago, Texas, and West Coast sounds is presented with Rodrigo Mantovani on bass, Taylor Streiff on keyboards, and Pierce Downer on drums.

Their new Alligator Records album, Get Your Back Into It!, is their third for the label. Produced by Moss and Mantovani, it contains fourteen original songs (twelve by Moss, two by Gruenling) and features guests including saxophonist "Sax" Gordon Beadle and organist "Brother" John Kattke on "Out Of The Woods." The album is inspired by blues from the 1940s through 1960s and includes stylistically distinct songs and three instrumentals.

AllMusic says the band, winner of the 2020 Blues Music Award for Blues Band Of The Year, "makes the case for the vitality of old-fashioned Chicago electric blues in the 21st century." Moss: "We like to push ourselves out of our comfort zone, and I feel like we accomplished that." He also says, "When we get together, the music takes over. We can’t hold back, and the energy just comes pouring out."

Nick Moss grew up in Chicago, learned from many original blues artists, and first made a name playing bass for Jimmy "Fast Fingers" Dawkins before moving to guitar with Willie "Big Eyes" Smith's Legendary Blues Band. Moss is known for blistering fretwork, soulful vocals, and award-winning songwriting.

Dennis Gruenling, a friend of Moss for over 20 years, is a self-taught harmonica player whose high-energy reed work has drawn comparisons to greats like James Cotton. Vintage Guitar says, "Gruenling’s harp, along with the Midwestern intensity of Moss’ blues guitar, is pure ecstasy." The band has earned multiple Blues Music Awards and international recognition.
