Kakizome 書き初め

Write a meaningful kanji character or phrase that represents your aspirations for the new year.

Kakizome (書き初め), or “first writing,” is a beloved Japanese New Year tradition in which people practice calligraphy to set intentions for the upcoming year. Historically, it began during the Heian period (794–1185) as an imperial court ritual. Today, it is practiced at home, in schools, and at large competitive gatherings.

Traditionally performed on January 2, kakizome involves using a calligraphy brush and ink to write a meaningful kanji character or phrase representing your aspirations for the new year.

This class is for adults ages 18 and up. Registration is encouraged. For details, call the library at 315-446-3578.
