Author Talk and Book Signing: Kim van Alkemade and Victoria Redel
Location
About
Kim van Alkemade, New York Times bestselling author of the new novel Upstate, will be joined in conversation by poet and novelist Victoria Redel, author of the critically acclaimed historical novel I Am You.
We're so excited to host Kim van Alkemade to celebrate the recent publication of Upstate. In addition to writing historical fiction, including Orphan #8, Alkemade is a bookseller in Saratoga Springs.
Upstate is a story of love, loss, and healing that speaks to our present moment while richly evoking the past. When a grieving writer sets out to revive an abandoned bookshop in upstate New York, she discovers forgotten letters that reveal the shop’s secret sapphic history.
“In Upstate, expert storyteller Kim van Alkemade deftly weaves together the voices of three extraordinary women, each looking for love, meaning, and a way to make their shattered families whole again. This page-turner has it all: starting over in midlife, sapphic longing, a dreamy bookstore—even a flock of sheep. I couldn't put it down, and cried more than once! By turns tender and unflinching, Upstate is the kind of novel you can wholeheartedly recommend to every reader you know.”
—Amy Shearn, author of Animal Instinct
Joining van Alkemade in conversation is Victoria Redel, author of I Am You, a “vibrant depiction of Amsterdam’s golden age” (The New York Times) in which two young women are bound by an intense rivalry of painting and power. The novel reimagines the life of renowned painter Maria van Oosterwijck during the Dutch Golden Age. It is a meditation on gender, an ode to artistic creation, and a story of unexpected friendship. I Am You was named a People Best New Book Pick, a Bustle Most Anticipated Book of the Fall, and a Book Riot Exciting New LGBTQ Historical Fiction Pick. Sarah Jessica Parker called it “spellbinding, wonderfully atmospheric, and impossible to forget.”
The two novelists will discuss the intersections of their recent works, including female artistic creation and hidden sapphic histories. Copies of Upstate and I Am You will be available for sale and signing after the talk.
This event is free and open to the public. Please RSVP.
