Featuring the lecture To Huyck and Beyond!: Understanding jack pine's southern range limit by Summer Research Fellow Mark Lesser, Ph.D. In the mid-twentieth century jack pine was planted at the Huyck Preserve, two hundred miles south of its range limit. This gives us an amazing opportunity to study how this tree species grows in conditions it does not naturally occur in, and better understand the factors that might control its distribution. Dr. Lesser and his student Zoe Fox, 2025 Odum Intern, took increment cores from over 100 trees in the late spring of 2025 to study their annual growth in response to climate conditions over the past century. Results indicate that increasing temperatures over the past several decades may be detrimental to jack pine growth -- a bellwether of things to come for jack pine at its natural southern range limit.
