About

“It’s time to make a change,” Robbie Fulks declares at the start of Now Then, his second album on Nashville’s Compass Records. Since emerging in the 1990s as a pioneer of today’s Americana movement, Fulks has explored many sounds and themes across 16 albums, performing on stages from the Grand Ole Opry and Late Night with Conan O’Brien to the Hollywood Bowl and Jimmy Kimmel Live with Steve Martin, Alison Brown, and Tim O’Brien.

Like a well-stocked jukebox, the 12 songs on Now Then range from folk to power pop, jazz to old-time country. Fulks says, "It’s from an older person’s outlook, and mostly true. The tone is about 70 percent reflective, 20 percent amused, and 10 percent angry."

Fulks is known for instrumental virtuosity and songwriting. Artists such as Sam Bush, Andrew Bird, John Cowan, the Old 97’s, and Hiss Golden Messenger have covered his songs. He has released albums reinterpreting Michael Jackson and Bob Dylan, plus two collections of unreleased songs and rarities totaling 103 tracks. His projects include a 2013 collaboration with The Mekons, productions for Brennen Leigh and Dallas Wayne, a duo with Linda Gail Lewis, and performances with comic improvisers and Second City fundraisers.

Heather Maloney

Massachusetts-based "writer song-singer" Heather Maloney found music during three years at a meditation center, shaping a sound rooted in silent reflection and reverence for storytellers like Joni, Rilke, Ken Burns, and Zen parables. She later traded the structured life of a yogi for touring, but her songwriting remains focused on inner life and storytelling.

With over 1,000 international shows and eight studio albums, she is preparing to release her ninth record, Exploding Star (out January 31, 2025). Written after her father’s death, Exploding Star is 12 songs tracked in part over two days in her abandoned childhood home, with Heather playing her father’s guitar throughout. The record is described in the original text as both celebratory and heartbreaking.

Heather’s music has aired on NPR, eTown, and AudioTree. Her song "Nightstand Drawer" was featured in the season finale of the CBS series Elementary, and her songs have been streamed widely on editorial Spotify playlists and Starbucks’ in-store playlists. She is also an illustrator and linocut artist and has toured as a headliner and in support of artists including Lake Street Dive, Shakey Graves, Gary Clark Jr., Rodrigo y Gabriela, Colin Hay, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Shawn Colvin, and Dar Williams.
