About

WFUV Presents – An Evening with Richard Shindell at The Barn

The Barn proudly welcomes Richard Shindell for a rare and intimate performance. A singer-songwriter who lives as both immigrant and emigrant, Shindell crosses thresholds and cultures, illuminating the human experience through his narrative songs. His journey has taken him from a Zen Buddhist monastery to the streets of Paris, from his New York roots to his current home in Buenos Aires.

Shindell’s music paints vivid pictures and inhabits strikingly diverse characters—novellas set to haunting melodies. His most recent release, Careless, meticulously crafted in New York and Buenos Aires, reflects both risk and reinvention, blending his signature acoustic work with the rejuvenating spark of electric guitar. During the pandemic, Shindell stayed grounded in the wide-open Argentine Pampa, where he wrote, recorded, and tended a quieter life, emerging with a renewed voice for the road.

Innovative, original, and occasionally spiritual, his songs move fluidly between the lighthearted and the political, the comic and the profound—shining empathy on the marginalized, while skewering prejudice, war, and religion with sharp wit. Whether in the soul of a wanderer or even the perspective of a cow tangled in barbed wire, Shindell brings worlds to life with startling clarity.
