As she watched friends skim stones on Brighton Beach, Paris Paloma felt energy shift. Life felt like it was taking shape again after a long period of personal trauma. She went to Bergen, Norway to work on new music. On the three days of the year that it didn’t rain in Europe’s wettest city, among silvery lakes and mountain peaks, life grew ever brighter. “the warmth” was formed.

“I ate up all the light, it shone through my teeth, I tasted sunbeams emanating from me… it can’t hurt me… now the warmth is returning,” she sings. This emotional arc is central to Paris Paloma’s debut album, cacophony.

The Derbyshire‑born musician released “labour” in 2023 — the first song she’d fully recorded in a proper studio. Early clips posted to TikTok built an audience before the official release. The track’s journal‑like lyricism and dark folk‑pop skewered the knots of women’s emotional labour and went on to break over 100 million streams on Spotify, enter the Official UK Singles Chart and US Billboard Chart, and soundtrack many TikToks. It spurred sold‑out shows in the UK and festival appearances in the US and Australia. Paris says, “I matured because of ‘labour’. As a young artist you’re both protected and limited – you’re putting songs that are so intimate into a void. It’s made me more considerate about how vulnerable these songs are going to be.”

Paris describes feeling “very held by my listeners.” Her fanbase is active online and off: on TikTok her 400K followers send videos that gain large views, fan art and lyrical analysis circulate across social platforms, and she’s crowdsourced hundreds of fan voices for a new version of “labour.” She’s received coverage from NME and Billboard and been named a Trending Artist on the Rise on YouTube.

A Goldsmiths fine art graduate, Paris’s visuals grow from her own fantasy drawings. cacophony (15 tracks) explores creation from chaos, weaving grief, love, patriarchy, trauma, Greek mythology, fantasy, and the literary gothic. Inspired in part by Stephen Fry’s Mythos, Paris says: “From this chaotic cosmic yawn, creation sprang forth.” Songwriting is catharsis and coping — the album was curated to form a natural rhythm, a kind of quest or hero’s journey.

Highlights and themes:
- “my mind (now)” opens the album with a haunting fugue and raw, skittering percussion. “My mind has not been silent since you,” she sings.
- “bones on the beach” is a turning point about coming out of survival mode and finding peace by taking care of yourself.
- The ‘apocalypse trio’ — “escape pod,” “last woman on earth,” and “bones on the beach” — addresses endings and agency. Paris says “last woman on earth” confronts the ways her voice has been taken away and finds uplifting agency.
- “triassic love song” is an ode to love returning, inspired by intertwined fossils.

Musically she blends dramatic instrumentation, folk sensibilities, and expansive pop. Paris cites influences ranging from Ed Sheeran and Bon Iver to Motown and jazz from her upbringing. She works from lyrics outward: a starting couplet or image, then melody. The album stretches her vocal range — she screams on record for the first time on “my mind (now),” reaches low tones on “his land,” and belts high notes in “last woman on earth.”

Visuals and live performance are central to her work. She gravitates toward eerie feminine fashion and has staged striking videos, including a darkly fantastical clip for “my mind (now)” directed by Matt Grass. Live, audiences sing her lyrics back; she’s sold out four headline London shows, opened for Maisie Peters, and is playing festivals as well as a UK and European tour.
