Land Art Week: Cochineal Ink Workshop with Kimball Art

Sun, Oct 4 · 10:00 AMto4:00 PM

Location

410 Campus Center Drive · Salt Lake City, UT

About

Join Porfirio Gutiérrez at the Kimball Art Center for a cochineal ink workshop during Land Art Week. Gutiérrez is a Zapotec American textile artist based in Ventura, California. He uses traditional Zapotec dyeing technologies and materials to create works that communicate contemporary experiences and the complexity of the Americas today.

Participants will use natural cochineal ink to create original compositions on textile, exploring how changes in chemistry, concentration, and application produce a range of colors. Rather than focusing on traditional dyeing techniques, the workshop investigates pigment as a contemporary artistic medium carrying memory, material knowledge, and history. All levels are welcome.

Drawing from his artistic practice, Gutiérrez will share his approach to cochineal as a living material that evolves through observation, experimentation, and making.

Gutiérrez’s work is included in Kimball Art Center’s exhibition Between the Lines, on view September 25, 2026–January 3, 2027.
