About
Opening reception for Extensions, multimedia art by Tyson Kennemer. Exhibit runs from April 6–May 23.
Artist's Statement
Extensions is a mixed media show where photographic images move beyond their edges. Many pieces begin with a photograph, but rather than remaining confined within traditional boundaries, they reach outward. In some works, I use diluted acrylic to achieve a watercolor-like transparency and flow—to pull colors directly from the photograph itself. These extracted hues then travel across the mat, creating a visual bridge that carries the image into the surrounding space, blurring the line between the photograph and its environment.
Artist's Bio
Tyson Kennemer grew up in a small coastal town in California, where his artistic journey began in a high school photography class. He has called Salt Lake City home since 2018. His award‑winning, often abstract work—shown across California, Oregon, and Utah—examines composition, light, and the subtle emotional life of everyday scenes, inviting viewers to see ordinary moments anew.
During the COVID pandemic he began experimenting with paint and was pleasantly surprised by the results. He found that thinned acrylic allowed him to heighten color and mood, extending and amplifying the feeling already present in his photographs. The resulting pieces occupy a space between image and gesture, where color and feeling guide the eye beyond the frame.
