About
Find respite and rejuvenation with an evening inspired by the natural world, featuring two monumental works by Sibelius.
Virtuoso Karen Gomyo takes the stage for Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, a vivid sonic journey through Finland’s landscapes, evoking crisp air, icy lakes, and the dualities of humankind and nature.
Sibelius’ soaring Fifth Symphony is distinctive for its clarity, elegance, and organicism—a “divine puzzle” even to the composer. Sibelius famously wrote in his diary: “It was as if God the Father was throwing pieces of mosaic from the edge of heaven and asking me to figure out what the pattern was.” You’ll delight in its unusual form and beauty, from its opening horn call to the finale’s unforgettable “swan theme.”
Plus, Elena Schwarz finds a clever aviary connection in this program’s opening work: the percussion-rich stylings of Peter Eötvös’ The Gliding of the Eagle in the Skies.
Join us for a pre-concert chat about the evening’s program with guest artists and symphony musicians, held 45 minutes prior to the performance start time in the First Tier Room.
