Disability in Horror Films

Just in time for Halloween! A free lecture from U of U Professor Angela Marie Smith on disability in horror films, from the 1930s to the present. Followed by a Q&A.

Angela Marie Smith will talk about representations of disability in horror cinema, from classic films such as Frankenstein (1931) and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932) to more recent examples such as Split (2016), Hush (2016), The Girl with All the Gifts (2016), Hereditary (2018), A Quiet Place (2018), Midsommar (2019), and Run (2020).

The talk shows how horror films often use disability to generate shock and terror, but it also looks at more nuanced disability representations that can affirm the knowledge and experiences of people with disabilities.
