About

Hello everyone,

I hope you had a fun and safe 4th of July. Here is the information about the JSM 10K this August.

  • What: A 10k run celebrating the life and running career of John Straley
  • Who: Anyone who wants to attend. If you are planning on joining, please send me an email or a text so I can get an accurate estimate of how many runners there will be. (My contact info is below.)
  • When: August 8th, race start at 8:00am
  • Where: The race will start and finish at 1285 East Yale Ave. There is street parking on Yale, or in the surrounding neighborhood. We will also have food and drinks at the finish for anyone who wants to linger around and share stories about John, running, life lessons, etc. I will provide coffee and bagels from Einstein Bro. Bagels, but I encourage everyone to bring something to share with the group.

Why:
John had a tremendous impact on our local running community and this is a great way to celebrate him. More than two decades ago John started The Black Sheep Running Club with a few of his friends, including my father, Rich. Back then John would plot and scheme and create some pretty hair-brained workouts. Over the years these have become core workouts in our training block.

When John passed away ten years ago I stepped into his shoes and did my best to keep the run club alive. We updated our communication style and we changed the club name, but we still run many of the same routines, and most importantly, we attract new runners the same way I was brought into the club, with a friendly greeting and a sincere welcome to join us on a run. I think John would be proud of what this group has evolved into, and it seems fitting to bring everyone together for a run to celebrate his life.
