Shanghai Ballet: Butterfly Lovers

Shanghai Ballet returns to North America after more than five years with The Butterfly Lovers, a full-length ballet based on one of China’s most treasured love stories. Often called the Chinese Romeo and Juliet, the legend tells of two young lovers whose devotion transcends social barriers and ultimately transforms them into butterflies.

Choreographed by Artistic Director Xin Lili, the production blends classical ballet technique with Chinese visual and theatrical traditions. Richly detailed costumes, vibrant scenic design, and fluid, expressive choreography create a world of lyrical beauty and dramatic intensity. Performed by Shanghai Ballet’s large, impeccably coordinated ensemble, The Butterfly Lovers offers a rare and captivating glimpse into a cornerstone of Chinese ballet.
