Birding Barrens Blitz — team birding competition.
Event time: 6:00 am–1:30 pm. The team competition runs 6:00 am–12:00 pm, culminating in an awards ceremony and light refreshments in the Discovery Center at 12:30 pm.
This event follows the American Birding Association Code of Ethics. Birdwatchers of all skill levels are invited to participate, from novice to expert.
Teams (both traversing and sit & spot) will cover different regions of the Albany Pine Bush Preserve, each contributing to full coverage of the preserve's hiking trails. Teams will compete to spot and identify as many species as possible in the time allotted.
The Albany Pine Bush Preserve is home to approximately 200 bird species. It is a New York State Bird Conservation Area, a National Audubon Society Important Bird Area, and part of the New York State Birding Trail.
Highlights:
- Join fellow birders to discover some of the approximately 200 avian species in the preserve.
- Interact with knowledgeable preserve staff and community partners and learn more about the preserve's ecosystem and species.
- Chance to win awards and prizes.
- Lunch with birding friends old and new.
$25 registration fee includes:
- Barrens Birding Blitz T-shirt. Due to production time, if you register after September 12 you may receive a different Pine Bush T-shirt.
- Event guidelines and birding guide (score sheet).
- Lunch and birding awards.
How registration works:
Register and pay the $25 registration fee to reserve your spot. Your team assignment, event guidelines, and birding guide (score sheet) will be emailed to you before the competition.

From I-87 take exit 2W (Rt 5 West, Central Avenue). Follow Rt 5 for about 2 miles then turn left onto Rt 155 (New Karner Rd). Continue on Rt 155 for about 1.2 miles. The Discovery Center is located on the left at 195 New Karner Road.
