Guitars A Go Go is an edge-pushing improvisational partnership of two acclaimed Hudson Valley– and NYC-based guitarists, Rick Warren and Sal Cataldi (aka Spaghetti Eastern Music). Armed with a plethora of effects pedals and a quest for meditative and melodic adventures that span a galaxy of musical influences and attitudes, the duo has been performing at Hudson Valley and NYC venues and art galleries since early 2019.

With Travel Advisory, their debut album released in June 2020, Guitars A Go Go swing for the fences, with nine tracks reflecting their left-leaning influences. The duo conjures everything from the contemplative soundscapes of Fripp and Eno and wandering proto-electronica of Krautrockers like Tangerine Dream and Faust to experimental/avant-garde six-stringers like Derek Bailey, Glenn Branca, Sonny Sharrock, David Torn, and Bill Orcutt, and to electronic classicists like Morton Subotnik and Pauline Oliveros.

The heart of Travel Advisory is a quartet of live-in-studio duets recorded just as the COVID-19 quarantine took hold. They are layered, looped dreamscapes that journey through moods from meditatively peaceful soundscapes to textured noise and dissonance, ranging in length from 10 to 19-plus minutes—all recorded without overdubs. Five more tracks were later produced in remote collaboration, with Cataldi adding guitars, synths, and effects at his studio in West Saugerties to solo pieces performed by Warren at his in Hudson, N.Y. The album has received critical praise and airplay on indie stations in the U.S., Germany, Holland, and the U.K., including WFMU, Radio Free Brooklyn, SOMA FM, Radio Spiral, Dark Tunnel Radio, and others.

Sal Cataldi (NYC and Saugerties) may be best known for his style-jumping solo project Spaghetti Eastern Music. With Spaghetti Eastern, Cataldi fuses hypnotic Eastern beats, blues, jazz, and electronica-influenced guitar instrumentals with gentle acoustic vocal tunes and looping. Time Out New York: “Cataldi’s largely instrumental, Eastern-influenced jams are infused with some delicate guitar work and hauntingly moody atmosphere.” The New York Times: he has “a beat unmistakably his own.” Other press calls include The Village Voice: “truly excellent”; Radio Woodstock: “a wild ride”; WFUV’s Mixed Bag: “beautiful and unique”; Hudson Valley One: “a whirling dervish of musical creation.” Cataldi also records with The Vapor Vespers (with poet Mark Muro) and with The Hari Karaoke Trio of Doom (with Doug Hitchcock and Percy Jones).

Originally from Kingston, Rick Warren has been deeply involved in the improvisational and experimental music scene fostered by vibraphonist Karl Berger at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock. Warren is best known for soundscape compositions that utilize guitar and various electronic sound sources, each a unique spontaneous creation. He is involved with the Woodstock-based soundpainting ensemble Audiocanvas and was featured on the 2019 disc Some Bad Western. Warren is also active with Slink Moss and the Magic Stones, the improvisational duo The Warren-Ver Straeten Half Quartet, and the acoustic duo Rick and Marilyn with Marilyn Miller.

Green Kill Sessions Program

Musicians and performers can shine on stage—and online—through Green Kill’s one-hour livestream shows. Performances happen Friday through Sunday evenings (except the first and third Fridays). Each event features a small in-person audience (30 seats) and global livestream access.

Performers are expected to help promote their shows, arrive early for sound checks, and send in equipment lists ahead of time. The venue provides a full sound and lighting setup, including drums, amps, a digital piano, and livestream equipment. Earnings from ticket sales are split among performers, the venue, and the sound engineer. Green Kill shares event highlights on YouTube and Substack, giving performers professional-quality footage to use for promotion.
