About
Adaptive Climbing Meetup
Adaptive climbing builds on a person’s existing abilities and helps them participate in the sport. If you have a physical disability and are looking for a challenging physical and mental experience, come join our group. Children and adults are welcome.
Adaptive Climbing Group is a community for people with permanent disabilities to participate inclusively in rock climbing. A person with a permanent disability that limits normal daily physical or developmental function is considered an adaptive climber by the group.
We welcome casual climbers and people interested in competing. Climbers who wish to compete are recognized by USA Climbing and the International Federation of Sport Climbing in four categories:
- Amputation/Limb Difference: Limb difference is not amputation and refers to a congenital abnormality of a limb. Subcategories: upper and lower limbs.
- Neurological: Brain damage causing permanent or degrading neuromuscular damage. Examples include Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and traumatic brain injury.
- Spinal Cord Injury/Paras: Permanent damage to the spinal cord between the cervical and lumbar segments. Usually, a wheelchair user.
- Visual Impairment: Blindness or severe impairment that is not helped with glasses.
When: The 4th Monday of the month, 6–8 pm
Cost: $10 per climber. This includes a day pass, rental gear, use of assisted devices, and trained volunteers to help belay climbers.
No experience is required. Adaptive Climbing Group volunteers are trained to support climbers wherever they are on their climbing journey.
Everyone in the facility needs to complete the Participation Agreement. Those interested in volunteering with Adaptive Climbing Group can attend monthly trainings.
