Tony Holiday with Laura Chavez – 12/4 – SOLD OUT!

There’s something about Tony Holiday that draws people together. Community has been at the core of Holiday’s young career since he moved from Salt Lake City to Memphis in 2017, where he’s been part of a soul-blues revival anchored by a close-knit collective of musicians.

Motel Mississippi, Holiday’s 2nd solo album, was recorded about an hour outside Memphis in Coldwater, Mississippi, at Zebra Ranch, the studio of the late Jim Dickinson. Combining North Mississippi Hill Country, Delta blues, and Memphis soul, Motel Mississippi mixes hypnotic blues, driving soul, and juke-joint stompers. The album includes six originals and two covers: “Rob & Steal” (Paul Wine Jones) and “Nobody But You” (Asie Payton).

Motel Mississippi began as a collaboration between Holiday, guitarist/songwriter A. J. Fullerton, and guitarist/producer Dave Gross. The album was recorded by Kevin Houston. Other musicians on the album include Lee Williams Jr. (drums), Terrance Grayson (bass), Aubrey McCrady (guitar), Jake Friel (harmonica), and Mikey Junior (backup vocals). Songs range from the drone and drive of “Rob & Steal” and “Get By” to juke-joint grooves like “Just As Gone” and the Cajun-infused double-harmonica instrumental “Yazoo River.”

Motel Mississippi follows 2020’s Soul Service and Holiday’s two volumes of Porch Sessions, where he recorded blues musicians across the United States and Europe on porches, in front of juke joints, and on front stoops. Guests on those projects included Charlie Musselwhite, Bobby Rush, John Primer, Lurie Bell, Southern Avenue, Victor Wainwright, and John Németh.

Tony will be joined on this tour by award-winning blues guitarist LAURA CHAVEZ.
