There’s something about Tony Holiday that draws people together. Community has been at the core of Holiday’s young career since he relocated from Salt Lake City to Memphis in 2017. He’s been part of a soul-blues revival there, working with a loose collective of musicians with a “family-like” attitude and a strong belief in one another, and mentored by past legends.

Motel Mississippi, Holiday’s second solo album, was recorded about an hour outside Memphis in Coldwater, Mississippi, at Zebra Ranch (the studio of the late Jim Dickinson). Combining North Mississippi Hill Country sounds, Delta blues, and Memphis soul, the album mixes hypnotic blues, driving soul, and juke-joint stomps. It includes six originals and two covers: “Rob & Steal” (Paul Wine Jones) and “Nobody But You” (Asie Payton).

Motel Mississippi began as a collaboration between Holiday, guitarist/songwriter A. J. Fullerton, and guitarist/producer Dave Gross. The album was recorded by Kevin Houston. Other musicians on the album include Lee Williams Jr. (drums), Terrance Grayson (bass), Aubrey McCrady (guitar), Jake Friel (harmonica), and Mikey Junior (backup vocals).

The record follows 2020’s Soul Service (produced by Ori Naftaly) and two volumes of Tony Holiday’s Porch Sessions, in which Holiday recorded blues musicians across the U.S. and Europe on porches, in front of juke joints, and on front stoops. Porch Sessions featured guests ranging from Charlie Musselwhite and Bobby Rush to John Primer, Lurie Bell, Southern Avenue, Victor Wainwright, and John Németh.

Tony will be joined on this tour by award-winning blues guitarist Laura Chavez.
