Legendary blues and roots rock band THE NIGHTHAWKS is heading back to Syracuse on June 9.
DOORS: 5:30PM SHOWTIME: 7:00PM
Venue:
- The 443 Social Club & Lounge
- 443 Burnet Ave, Syracuse, NY 13203
About the band:
The Nighthawks was an idea in Mark Wenner’s brain long before he was able to implement it. The musical product of pre-1958 radio in Washington, D.C., he did not know there were rules against mixing blues, R&B, honky-tonk country, doo-wop, gospel, and rockabilly into one delicious stew.
The current lineup for The Nighthawks is:
- Mark Wenner: Vocals, Harmonica
- Mark Stutso: Drums, Vocals
- Sol Roots: Bass
- Dan Hovey: Guitar, Vocals
In 1972, Mark, then 23, returned to his hometown after a New York City band apprenticeship eager to start a real, work-every-night band based on American roots music. Washington's mix of musical traditions provided a receptive local scene.
The Founding Quartet:
The original Nighthawks lineup solidified in mid-1974 with Mark Wenner and Jimmy Thackery up front, Jan Zukowski on bass, and Pete Ragusa on drums. That quartet toured extensively until Jimmy's departure in 1986. The band opened for and played with many Blues and Rockabilly legends, including Muddy Waters, James Cotton, Carl Perkins, and worked with John Hammond and Pinetop Perkins.
Later years and personnel changes:
After Jimmy's departure, Mark, Jan, and Pete continued, serving as Elvin Bishop's East Coast band and backing artists on Rosebud Agency tours. A series of guitarists included Warren Haynes and Steuart Smith. Collaboration with Jimmy Hall led to a solid quintet that included guitarist Jimmy Nalls; that lineup did not release recordings, though Jimmy Nalls has included a free live Nighthawks show from New York's Bottom Line with orders of his CD.
Subsequent guitarists included Danny Morris and Pete Kanaras. Jan Zukowski later joined the Fabulous Hubcaps. Pete Ragusa stayed with the band until 2010.
A team of veteran players:
Mark Stutso spent nearly two decades with former Nighthawk Jimmy Thackery and played in several rock bands before that. Originally from West Virginia, he spent five years in the coal mines before turning to music. He lives in Pittsburgh and has collaborated with Glenn Pavone and Norman Nardini. His vocals are a force to be reckoned with.
Blues Music Award:
In 2009, Sirius XM's Bill Wax invited The Nighthawks to record live tracks for the "B. B. King’s Bluesville" channel. The recordings were released as Last Train to Bluesville on RipBang Records and won Acoustic Album of the Year at the Blues Foundation's Blues Music Awards in Memphis in May 2011.
After 40 years, The Nighthawks are still having a Damn Good Time. And so will you. Listen up!
