Join CNY Artist Initiative featured artist Melissa Zarem for a gallery talk about her work and special exhibition, Nervous System Carnival. Light refreshments will follow.

Melissa Zarem is an abstract painter working in mixed media. Her practice layers expressive gesture, experimental mark-making, and accumulated texture to produce richly built surfaces. Through an ongoing dialogue with her materials, Zarem’s work is made with the understanding that the truth of seeing is not fixed or singular. Borders are permeable, and opposing forces coexist with both balance and tension. The paintings evolve, becoming their own evidence of growth and complexity.

Zarem’s work has been exhibited at the Johnson Museum, the Abrons Arts Center, the Arnot Museum, the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, SUNY Corning Community College, and Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art, and Planning.

Melissa Zarem: Nervous System Carnival is part of the Everson CNY Artist Initiative, an exhibition program celebrating the multifaceted talents of regional artists. The CNY Artist Initiative is made possible with support from Sandra Hurd and Joel Potash.
