Jianling Yue is an expert in Chinese paper-cutting, an ancient folk art with a millennia-long history that was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
Chinese paper-cutting is deeply rooted in rural life and culture, carrying multiple layers of meaning. Traditionally it was used for prayers and to express wishes and protections, including:
- invoking rain, warding off misfortune, and expressing wishes for good fortune, wealth, happiness, longevity, love, and prosperity
- depicting scenes of daily life, animals, and plants from the natural world
- decorating homes (walls, furniture, and windows — hence the traditional name "window flowers")
- serving as a centerpiece for festivals, birthdays, weddings, and other life ceremonies
Through her workshops and classes, Jianling offers participants an opportunity to explore the history, cultural significance, and techniques of Chinese paper-cut art. Her presentations include live demonstrations of precise cutting techniques, and participants create their own designs to apply what they’ve learned and express their creativity. This hands-on experience deepens understanding of the art form and fosters a personal connection to its cultural legacy.
