Directed by David Bickerstaff, this documentary from Exhibition on Screen explores the life and work of the boldly experimental, famously witty artist James McNeill Whistler, a contemporary of the Impressionists admired by Van Gogh and Manet. Made in close collaboration with Tate Britain and drawing on its landmark retrospective, the film traces Whistler's pursuit of "art for art's sake," from his most celebrated painting, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, to the scandals and provocations that defined his career. A vivid portrait of the man behind one of art history's most recognizable images.
