What begins as a quiet anomaly tied to animal welfare records at the National Horse Showcase expands into a revelation: modern crime no longer needs guns or secrecy when it can exploit trust, tradition, and institutions designed to look benevolent. Blending the atmospheric elegance of a historic resort town with the forensic tension of contemporary cyber-crime, the novel exposes how legacy power adapts, moving from cash and violence to nonprofits, escrow accounts, and digital ledgers. As Catherine closes in, she isn’t chasing criminals so much as dismantling the illusion that systems are neutral, an illusion her adversary is willing to kill to preserve.
