About
John has been playing saxophone since the age of 12. He has loved music since childhood, when he always carried a toy guitar wherever he went. “My biggest influence on me then was my uncle who played guitar and piano. I would listen to him play all the time. I was hooked immediately.”
After his high school teacher, Norman Clo, introduced him to jazz, John decided to pursue a career in music. He studied at the College of Saint Rose with saxophonist Paul Evoskevich and earned a BS in Music Education. He returned home to Gloversville to look for a job and gigs. Over the next three years, he played with Ben E. King, The Drifters, and The Classics Four, and formed the OverEasy Horns, which played with local R&B band Cleen Street.
In 1995, John became the instrumental music teacher at his alma mater, Gloversville High School. He completed an MA in Jazz Studies at the College of Saint Rose in December 1998. John continues to play a variety of music with his own band and as a substitute with area bands, while teaching his students to appreciate the beauty of the music they create at school.
