Artful Mornings

Calling all young artists ages six through twelve! Join us at the Albany Institute for fun, hands-on activities led by our museum educators. Prepare to learn new things, experiment with new ideas, and connect with new people.

Program structure:
- Ages 9–12: three-day session, 9AM–12PM each day.
- Ages 6–8: one-day session, 9AM–12PM.

Fees (fee includes all materials, instruction, and museum admission):
- Three-day session: $90 non-members; $65 AIHA members.
- One-day session: $30 non-members; $25 AIHA members.

Registration:
- Registration link forthcoming. Advanced registration is required; spaces are limited.
- Sessions will be cancelled if minimum registration is not met one week prior to the session date.
- Registration for each session closes the day before the program.
- Registration fees are non-refundable.

General FAQs:
- Museum doors will open approximately 15 minutes before the program start time.
- All required materials are included in the registration fee.
- Please dress for mess! Smocks/aprons are available, or bring your own if preferred.
- A snack break will be offered (outdoors weather permitting).

Session themes:

Wilderness Triptych
- Explore how artists depicted the wilderness over time — from Ancient Egyptians carving ibises to Walter Launt Palmer's snow scenes and contemporary uses of color. Young artists will create a triptych, a three-paneled painting that weaves together different styles encountered in class.

Civil War: Soldiers and Albany
- Learn what life was like for Civil War soldiers, what they carried and ate, how families kept track of relatives, and how Albany helped raise funds. Examine how artists like James Hart responded to the war and explore related art projects.

Light, Shadows, and Darkness
- Explore how artists use light and darkness to define form and evoke emotion. Inspired by the Hudson River School and Ancient Egypt, participants will create works using light, shadows, and different materials.

Board Game Design
- Explore the history of board games and what makes a great game. Create a board game inspired by the Albany Institute's exhibitions: design the board, rules, moveable pieces, box, and promotional material.
