Trombone Shorty

Born Troy Andrews, Trombone Shorty got his start (and nickname) earlier than most: at four he made his first appearance at Jazz Fest performing with Bo Diddley; at six he was leading his own brass band; and by his teenage years he was hired by Lenny Kravitz to join the band for the Electric Church World Tour.

Shorty’s proven he’s more than just a horn player. Catch a gig, open the pages of the New York Times or Vanity Fair, or flip on any late-night or morning TV show and you’ll see an undeniable star with utterly magnetic charisma, a natural born showman who can command an audience with the best of them.

Since 2010 he’s released five chart-topping studio albums (his most recent being 2022’s Lifted). He has toured and collaborated widely, including with:
- Jeff Beck, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pharrell, Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson, Foo Fighters, ZHU, Zac Brown, Normani, and Ringo Starr.

He’s played major festivals such as Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk, and Newport Jazz; performed at the GRAMMY Awards four times and at the White House six times; appeared on dozens of TV shows; and was honored at the Sesame Street Gala with his own Muppet. He also launched the Trombone Shorty Foundation to support youth music education and received a Caldecott Honor for his first children’s book.

In New Orleans, Shorty leads his own Mardi Gras parade atop a giant float crafted in his likeness, hosts the annual Treme Threauxdown shows (which have drawn guests including Usher, Nick Jonas, Dierks Bentley, Andra Day, and Leon Bridges), and has taken over the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s final set.

Shorty’s Trombone Shorty Foundation runs a cultural exchange trip to Cuba. The fourth trip will take place in January 2025 and includes guest artists who join Shorty and the Foundation to host workshops and play concerts in Cuba over a five-day period, with nearly 100 students. These exchange programs have been featured on NPR and CBS Mornings.

Lifted, Shorty’s second release for Blue Note Records and his fifth solo LP, was released in 2022. Recorded at Shorty’s Buckjump Studio with producer Chris Seefried, the album channels the raw power and grooves of his live show and blends funk, soul, R&B, and psychedelic rock. The album features special guests including Gary Clark Jr. and Lauren Daigle, and contributions from the rhythm section of Shorty’s high school marching band.

Since the release of Lifted, Shorty and his band have appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, TODAY, Good Morning America, and CBS Mornings. He has performed at the MusiCares pre-GRAMMYs gala, the Roots Picnic with Lil Wayne, on the NPR Tiny Desk (featuring Juvenile), and at the White House’s 2024 Juneteenth concert. His 2024 summer tour featured special guest Big Boi and included a stop at the Hollywood Bowl.
