Dr. Shaw began his career in psychiatry while simultaneously exploring art-making as a vehicle for curiosity, creativity, and transformation. In 1974, as his art career gained traction, he put psychiatry on hold and devoted the next 15 years exclusively to being an artist. He continues to explore and master various mediums and aesthetic challenges, seeing the life of artist and psychotherapist as connected by paying attention and transformation.
He states: “it is not what we see, but how we see” and lives aligned with a sense that “wisdom is not just the multitude of ideas and stories, but action, engaging directly with the world.”
Shaw has participated in many solo and group exhibitions around the country, with 10 one-man museum shows including the Williams College Art Museum. His work and public sculptures are in nearly 50 museum, municipal, and university collections, as well as major private collections such as Nelson Rockefeller Kykuit in Pocantico, NY. He has exhibited large outdoor work at venues including Storm King Art Center, the Washington DC International Sculpture Conference, Art on the Riverfront in NYC, and the Grounds for Sculpture outside Princeton, NJ.
Paintings, small sculptures, and drawings can be seen at North Front Gallery, 52 North Front St., Kingston, NY.
