About

Juma Sultan was catapulted into worldwide notoriety when he closed the Woodstock festival with Jimi Hendrix, and is well known for appearing on 14 posthumous Hendrix releases. However, his cultural significance is more relevant in the context of the New York City Loft Jazz scene of the 1960’s-70’s.

During this period, he collaborated with such notables as:
- Sonny Simmons
- Albert Ayler
- Pharaoh Sanders
- Sonny Sharrock
- Archie Shepp
- James “Blood” Ullmer
- Milford Graves
- Dave Burell
- Barry Altshult
- Sam Rivers
and many, many others.

Juma has been musically active consistently. His current band, based in the Hudson Valley, is a varying ensemble of musicians from diverse musical backgrounds converging into a unique sound best described as “World-Beat Garage Jazz”.
