About

Intro to Blender: Build and Texture a Treasure Chest

Saturday, October 3rd | 11:00am–2:00pm
Instructor: Chad Hamlet

This introductory class is designed for students who are completely new to Blender and want to learn the fundamentals of creating a finished 3D model.

Students will be guided through the process of building and texturing a stylized treasure chest from start to finish. Using provided orthographic reference images, students will learn how to break a design into simple shapes, construct the model using Blender’s core modeling tools, and refine it into a finished game-style asset.

The class will introduce a practical 3D production workflow, beginning with reference setup and basic modeling and continuing through UVs, materials, texturing, lighting, and rendering. Students will also be provided with texture trim sheets that can be used to add wood, metal, and other surface details to their treasure chest.

No previous Blender or 3D modeling experience is required.

Students will learn:
- How to navigate the Blender interface and 3D viewport
- How to import and work from orthographic reference images
- How to move, rotate, and scale objects
- The difference between Object Mode and Edit Mode
- How to build a model from simple primitive shapes
- Basic mesh editing techniques including extruding, scaling, and manipulating vertices, edges, and faces
- How to use bevels and other tools to refine the shape of a model
- How to organize the different parts of a 3D asset
- Introductory UV editing
- How to apply and use provided texture trim sheets
- How to create and assign basic materials
- Basic lighting, camera setup, and rendering

Final Project
Students will leave the class with a completed textured treasure chest, along with an understanding of the basic Blender workflow they can use to begin creating their own 3D models.
