Build Your Own Cigar Box Ukulele
Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19: 1:00pm - 3:30pm
Instructor: Alan Mapes
Build your own cigar box ukulele with Saratoga luthier Alan Mapes. This two-part workshop will produce an easy-playing, good-sounding instrument from a repurposed decorative cigar box, mated to a ukulele kit from MGB Guitars.
During the first session, the box will be joined with a pre-made neck and bridge. After glue cures overnight, chrome tuning machines will be added to the neck and strings installed. The ukes will then go through a setup process for nice low string action and easy playing. We may even learn a couple of chords and play a song!
Alan Mapes is a hobbyist luthier who builds and repairs guitars and other stringed instruments at his home near Saratoga Springs. He volunteers with Caffe Lena, repairing donated instruments and supporting their School of Music. He enjoys taking music classes and participating in music jams at the Caffe and other locations in the area, playing guitar, banjo and cigar box ukulele.
