About
Waterfalling
Lake George Arts Project is pleased to present Waterfalling, an exhibition of paintings by acclaimed artist Elliott Green. Most of the paintings in Waterfalling were made at Yaddo, the artists’ colony in Saratoga Springs, New York, during a period of blissfully explosive creativity. The freedom and concentration of that time animate the work: forms surge, cascade, collide, and dissolve, while color and gesture create a constantly shifting sense of weather, water, and terrain.
Rather than depict actual places, Green constructs imaginary landscapes through a distinctive fusion of gesture, color, composition, and luminosity. Clouds, hills, and bodies of water emerge within spaces that feel persuasively natural yet correspond to no specific location.
About the Artist
Born in Detroit, Green spent more than two decades in New York City before settling in Athens, a small town in the upper Hudson Valley, where he has lived for more than twenty years. Soon after moving upstate, recognizable elements of landscape began to enter his paintings, a development that deepened during a yearlong residency in Italy in 2011–12.
Green’s work has been the subject of more than two dozen solo exhibitions at galleries and museums throughout the United States. His honors include a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, the Rome Prize, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, and awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is represented by Miles McEnery Gallery in New York.
