About
Opening reception for Hypochondira of Heart by Sierra Suris, curated by Kim Kolasa.
Artist statement:
Hypochondria of the Heart explores how the ghost of nostalgia continues to haunt the human condition, even in the age of continuous stimulation and immediate gratification. Using 120 film and my beloved Yashica, I have become infatuated with capturing memories and buildings. All of which elicit a sentiment of what was—a reminder of their and our own past, creating an ache within the heart that cannot be articulated.
Artist bio:
Sierra Suris was raised in the Hudson Valley, leaving in 2007 to attend The Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC. She currently works for New Belgium Brewing, selling beer to help support her film and travel habits. During her daily travels she carries her Yashica camera, a gift from her Nanny, who used it in the 1960s, to capture people and places that make her eyes hungry and her heart twinge.
