About

TEMPO Concert Hall — Last Mondays of the month, 6:30–7:30 PM

Make music with your feet! In this lesson, we’ll start with the fundamentals of flatfooting and clogging, drilling basics and building steps. There will be a mix of choreographed and improvised steps as we explore rhythm, musicality, and connecting with the music. We’ll learn fancy high steppin’ as well as solid, low-impact styles—there’s something for everybody! Expect to get a good workout. Drop-ins welcome.

Flatfooting is a percussive folk dance from Appalachia. Dancers make rhythms using heel and toe strikes, shuffles, chugs, stomps, and more. It is typically a solo, improvised dance, done to accompany old time fiddle and banjo music.

Please wear comfortable, hard-soled shoes, such as leather or hard rubber. Sneakers are not ideal; no tap shoes, please. Bring a couple of options if you’re not sure. If you have questions about shoes, please reach out.

Please RSVP, but walk-ins are welcome. Suggested donation: $10–15, payable online or at the door. The event is upstairs in the Concert Hall; please enter through the front door on Wurts St.

Dancers are welcome to join or watch the Old Time Jam downstairs in the TEMPO Lounge on the last Mondays of the month, 7:00–9:00 PM.
