Exploring the best of the almost-best!
The 2026 book club celebrates books shortlisted for prestigious literary prizes. While they didn’t take home the top honor, these titles more than earn their spot on your reading list with their exceptional writing and unforgettable stories.
We meet on the first Saturday of each month at 2 pm at the library. No registration needed.
December’s book is Tenth of December by George Saunders, shortlisted for the 2013 National Book Award.
Writing brilliantly and profoundly about class, sex, love, loss, work, despair, and war, Saunders cuts to the core of the contemporary experience. These stories take on the big questions and explore the fault lines of our own morality, delving into what makes us good and what makes us human.
Unsettling, insightful, and hilarious, the stories in Tenth of December—not only through their manic energy and focus on what is redeemable in human beings, but also their generosity of spirit—entertain and delight; they fulfill Chekhov’s dictum that art should “prepare us for tenderness.”
